Oubliette is a multi-user dungeon game (MUD) and was originally conceived and written in 1977 by Jim Schwaiger on the PLATO system from the University of Chicago, Urbana. Later authors - Dr. John Gaby, Dr. Blancherd DeLong, Jerry Bucksath with the "Varget" (spell language ex. "dumafiegor") by David Emigh.
Umm yes; I did say "1977". It was way ahead of it's time...Now here's the good part.
It is currently up and playable on a Cybis server run by Mike Cochran. Mike has been doing a great job bringing back many of the great PLATO lessons and games including Avatar, Moria, Empire and most recently - Oubliette.
You can download the client and requests sign-ons from: www.cyber1.org. The system is free although donations are accepted.
Oubliette has been coming along nicely with current work being done by Jim Schwaiger, Gilbert Coville and Ron Janezcko. These guys have done a great job coding and getting the game up and running on the new system. The game is very much playable right now and at any one time you can see up to 40-45 adventurers. Ron and I used to game in the old plato days (just around 1977!) when we were in Junior High together. We also met Gilbert around that time who I believe was doing programming even back then.
Anyway stop reading this; go to Mike's site, download the client and start playing! This game doesn't have wiz-bang graphics, but it does have a GREAT game engine. It has real-time combat, a 3D viewpoint and a ton of items, monsters, different races and classes to choose from, a Castle, and 10 dungeon levels. You can meet other players in the tavern and join up to form parties.
If you've never been on PLATO before, you have to learn some of the keys - hit Help / Pterm keyboard from the pterm client.
Ok; that's it. Now get going then come back here and tell us about it!
