I noticed some odd behavior SR'ing on 4. What I would do is sweep 4, head back to the stairs and have the leader stop1 and come back in with the level repopulated. (was SRing for d-rings)
Now sometimes when I do this, I still run into what appears to be a SR but as a regular encounter (not suprised) with no box or $$. These encounters are what to normally be a SR's because they are 15 HellHounds, or 15 Will-o-Wisp etc, and no other SR is found on the level.
This could be a bug, or it could be by design. Maybe the authors felt that using stop1 to repopulate the level was a form of cheating, thus forcing the leader to go back to the castle to repopulate the SR's.
An interesting twist, because those who are using stop1 to repopulate can miss out on SR's, thus forcing the leader into the castle, and recieving the aging effect.
Anyone else notice this?

I found in the notes file that this appears to be a new "feature". There is a chance that your SR encounter may be a regular encounter. If you get a good roll on the SR, you get suprised and the box, if you get a bad roll then it is a regular encounter with no box.

Wow. That's odd. That's gotta suck when you're SR'ing 8/9/10.

Yeah. Just encountered 15 Vampires on 6. No SR.

It is correct, it is by design and was changed to be that way in the mid-80's. There is some chance (I think either 1 in 3 or 1 in 6) in any repop that the SR will be unboxed. If it is unboxed, it will not surprise the party; the surprise roll will either be even ("you have encountered . . . .") or be in favor of the party ("you have surprised . . . .").
