My understanding is that Lawful parties (any party that has a Lawful party member, even if it's 8 Neutrals and 1 Lawful) can not fight certain SR encounters - you get the message "<monster> greets your Lawful party!" which prevents them from fighting and hence coughing up whatever goodie that non-Lawfuls would then snarf.
I'm not at all sure which of the SR's are Lawful...anyone out there know? Some/all dragon types? Guess it would help if I knew what items they are missing out on; if they were chaotic items (Illearth Stone) only then there would be no huge loss however this would still not explain why anyone would run Lawful if Chaotic has no such restriction all other things being equal.
Unless I'm missing something, there seems to be a huge disadvantage to running Lawful with nothing to mitigate this disadvantage - like they get to wear/use better equipment (not that I know of - do they??) I can't see why Lawfuls are getting pimped.
I gotta think that the authors had something in mind when this decision was made; the only thing I can think of is that some races cannot be chaotic when rolled. However; these races can be Neutral, so the parties are still going to end up being chaotic if nobody sees any reason to build as Lawful.
Please share your viewpoint.

Personally, I believe that the lawful SR's should be changed so that lawful parties can acquire the same loot as neutral or chaotic parties. I've come across two lawful Sr's -- one on level 9 and the other on level 10. The lawful SR on 9 replaced a 15 beholder encounter sometime in the mid-1980's I would guess.
