Nice job with the forum, Ray. Say, does anyone know how many times Orcus was defeated back in the old days? I only know of one, by the power team of truck etc.

I can only think of one time. As I recall, there was a whole group (perhaps 15) of Orcus guarding the Mithril on level 10 (special room). There was lots of questing for the Mithril and eventually the Truck team was successful.

Cool. Would be great to hear some details about how the game used to work. Who were the players back then? Any of the current crew?

I thought they were mostly 'phystemp' guys in the UI Physics lab. Could be wrong tho. The only char names I remember in the power party were truck and Strider.
Couple anecdotal stories I heard. One time truck got surprised and charmed and wiped out the entire party except one. Another time, Strider took a trip down alone (a VERY dangerous thing to do in the old game), was promptly surprised by priests, charmed and killed. Before he could stop1 out, he was stripped naked of some VERY valuable stuff.
A least, that was the scuttlebutt back then.

Contrary to the popular belief, the Oubliette authors were not very good players (in the general sense, although we had an enormous amount of fun playing the game). I think the highest level player any of us ever had was less than level 20 (mine was level 16 when he died).
The player Truck was an Elf Samurai rolled up by Mike Wei, if memory serves. He was close to 31 across the board when he was rolled, which was quite amazing.
Strider was played by a remarkably gifted gentleman named Gary Johnson, who was working on his PhD in electrical engineering. He was quite friendly with the Oubliette authors since he played exclusively at the physics site (with his "ee" signon). However, he never received any aid from the authors, and in fact, when our parties would get wiped out and need a rescue, we would call Gary.
Gary played religiously from midnight to 7 am, virtually every night. During the same period of time, he completed his PhD in less than 3 years, and was even married. By means never completely explained, his wife had a child during this time.

Tim Whalen, Bruce Carroll and Glenn Hard (and others) used to run level 10 from the psych building. I recall once 15 orcus being taken out at cerl. I think Tom Tryboski was in on that one as well as the names above. This was in the 1979 to 1982 timeframe. I sure remember teleporting my maxed out Sage to perm death one time.

Mike Wei did roll truck. The only SR in the game (until late 1979) was 15 Orcus guarding a mithril coat on lvl 10 of course. All other Items could be found randomly. Anywhere from 5-10 Orcus could cough a Mithril Shield. The SR's for each level later implemented were suggested by several people who ran together on cerl in 79. John Briggs briggs/css was probably the luckiest (and therefore best) leader back then.

By far the most amusing night in oubliette was one night when a group of us played in the second floor author room in CERL. The group was JLW, Flint Pellett, me and either Briggs or Flom (I don't remember which). We took out 3 coat encounters that night, and JLW was the odd-person out. We never let him forget it (he couldn't win a rolloff to save his life that night).
